Market Weighton, as its name suggests, is a thriving market town in the heart of East Yorkshire, with picturesque Georgian and Victorian streets, a town green and duck pond, and pleasant walks around the area.
The town's most famous resident was William Bradley. He was born in 1787, and grew to the staggering height of 7 feet 9 inches, making him, to this day, England's tallest man.
Market Weighton Town Council aims to maintain a good quality of life for town residents of all ages, supports activities which attract visitors thereby making the town sustainable. The current Electorate of Market Weighton is 5,344.
The Council consists of 13 councillors who were elected in May 2015, and in the Town Hall a full time Town Clerk and an Administration Officer.
The full time Handyman, part time Assistant Handyman and Cemetery Caretaker maintain the following open spaces which are enjoyed by both residents and visitors: St Helens Well, The Monkey Run & Butterfly Area, War Memorial Playing Field, Aspen Close Play Park, the Londesborough Road Wildlife Sanctuary, the Green, the Holme Road Allotments and the Holme Road Cemetery.
The Council also supply and maintain wayside seats, bus shelters, waste bins, salt bins and planters around the area, as well as operating and maintaining the CCTV system in the parks and the town centre.
The Town Hall at 2 Linegate is staffed 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 1pm Fridays. Residents frequently call in with enquiries on a range of topics and can view plans that have been submitted for consultation, burial records, minutes of Town Council Meetings, (which go back for many years) scrap books of news items about the town and Dog Bags.
